Jevington Drive Self-Build Houses and Bungalows

On
the 2nd of November 1920, Benjamin Tillstone Rogers-Tillstone formerly
of Moulsecoomb Place, Brighton sold land at Bevendean to The County
Borough of Brighton as shown on the map below.

The southern area of the land marked pink was used as allotments. Some of this land was subsequently used for housing, however, part of the land is still used as allotments today.

The steep slope behind The Avenue up to Jevington Drive is covered with trees and bushes and was not considered suitable for house building or cultivation.

The photograph below shows the land before building work started. It is dated July 1960, showing the allotments, the Avenue and some of the flats on the Bates Estate in the distance on the right-hand side.

Some of this land was sold to groups of men who formed Self Build Housing Associations and then constructed houses and bungalows which are now on either side of Jevington Drive.
Moulsecoomb Self-Build Housing Association constructed 16 pairs of semi-detached bungalows coloured green on the plan below. These were built on the south west side of Jevington Drive and in Birling Close.
Planning permission for the construct of the bungalows was given on 19 August 1960.

These houses were built on the piece of land encircled by Jevington Drive. Plans for these houses were approved on 5 December 1960.

Two blocks each of 3 terraced houses were constructed for the Willingdon Housing Association Ltd at either end in Willingdon Road. Planning permission was granted on 11 February 1964. The house numbers for these houses are 2, 2A, 4, 22, 24 and 26.
