ARP shelters at North Moulsecombe

Two one hundred people ARP
shelters were built on the edge of the Wild Park near to the Lewes
Road. Two shelters were built in Barcombe Road, one for 50 people and
one for 25. A shelter for 50 persons was built at the south end of Newick road.
Numerous Archway shelters were created in the middle of blocks of 4
houses using the passageway under the houses, by placing sandbag walls
at either end. These are marked on the map below.

Plans were also drawn up to dig a tunnel 860 feet into the side of the hill at the Lewes Road end of the Wild Park.

There is no evidence that this tunnel shelter was ever built.
The photograph below is for an ARP Shelter and First Aid post at North Moulsecombe.

A man with a metal
helmet is standing in centre of picture. Photograph taken on 20th
October 1939.
