Doug Raynsford, When I was a Kid

Like ten bob notes and the faithful old quid
Duffle coats worn by boys and girls
Sweet cigarettes and liquorice whirls
Marbles, yo-yos, comics that as well
Robin Hood on telly, or William Tell
Trams and buses, chuffing steam trains
Dandelion clocks and daisy chains
Tomato soup with bread to start
Bangers and mash and treacle tart
Roly-poly and steamed plum duff
School dinners, now they were rough
Tune into the Goons on the radio set
Tin bath in the lounge, carpet all wet
Medicals at school, and Nit Nurses too!
Verruca's and warts and head lice shampoo
Park drives that came in packets of five
Dance halls, rock 'n'' roll and all that jazz
Outside lavatories on a cold winter's night
There's no electric light, the candle for a light
Go to the fish shop for a few pence worth of chips
Remember blue packets assault in the crisps
Tanners and halfpennies and Three penny bits
Meccano and train sets and Airfix kits
Triumphs, Norton''s, BSA's as well
I had a push bike - with a broken Bell
Those years have passed by
And I wish they never did
But I do remember
When I was a kid.
