The Estate - Bevendean History Project

The Bevendean Estate before 1945 continued

Road building started at the bottom of the Avenue near the Lewes Road about 1920 with the houses in The Avenue (to the western
end of Manton Road). The Crescent; The Highway; Colbourne Avenue,
Southall Avenue and Hillside were built between 1920 and 1924.
Between 1930 and 1934 the Brighton Corporation extended its housing along the Bevendean valley with 85 - 123 and 110 - 120 The Avenue and Manton Road. As this was on land previously belonging to Lower Bevendean Farm, these new houses were known as the Bevendean estate.
The building of houses at Higher Bevendean also started about this time.

Aerial view taken in December 1932, showing that the houses in the Avenue as far as Manton road had been built, with part of Bevendean Crescent completed on the extreme right.
Lower & Upper Bevendean Avenue houses were built between 1933 and 1935 for the outside of the roads and the shops facing the Avenue green. The houses inside the central triangle were built between 1936 and 1937.
The flats at the junction of Upper and Lower Bevendean Avenues were not built until the middle of the 1960s.

The picture here must be from the late 1930s or early 1940s as the houses had been built in the triangle in the middle, but there is no sign of the prefabs which were built in late 1945 and early 1946.
The houses half way up the picture on the left are in Higher Bevendean.
